  • SOHO's 2000th Comet (2010.12.26) [720p]

On December 26, SOHO discovered its 2000th comet. Drawing on help from citizen scientists around the world, SOHO has become the single greatest comet finder of all time. This is all the more impressive since SOHO was not specifically designed to find comets, but to monitor the sun. Of course, it is not SOHO itself that discovers the comets -- that is the province of the dozens of amateur astronomer volunteers who daily pore over the fuzzy lights dancing across the pictures produced by SOHO's LASCO (or Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph) cameras. Over 70 people representing 18 different countries have helped spot comets over the last 15 years by searching through the publicly available SOHO images online at http://soho.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime-images.html The 1999th and...

Over 70 people representing 18 different countries have helped spot comets over the last 15 years by searching through the publicly available SOHO images online. The 1999th and 2000th comet were both discovered on December 26 by Michal Kusiak (photo below), an astronomy student at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Kusiak found his first SOHO comet in November 2007 and has since found more than 100. It took SOHO ten years to spot its first thousand comets, but only five more to find the next thousand. That's due partly to increased participation from comet hunters and work done to optimize the images for comet-sighting, but also due to an unexplained systematic increase in the number of comets around the sun. Indeed, December alone has seen an unprecedented 37 new comets spotted so far, a number high enough to qualify as a "comet storm." LASCO, the instrument on-board SOHO that has been used to find comets, was not designed primarily for that purpose. The LASCO's camera blocks out the brightest part of the sun in order to better watch emissions in the sun's much fainter outer atmosphere, or corona. LASCO's comet finding skills are a natural side effect -- with the sun blocked, it's also much easier to see dimmer objects such as comets. Approximately 85% of the comets discovered with LASCO are thought to come from a single group known as the Kreutz family, believed to be the remnants of a single large comet that broke up several hundred years ago. The Kreutz family comets are "sungrazers" -- bodies whose orbits approach so near the Sun that most are vaporized within hours of discovery -- but many of the other LASCO comets boomerang around the sun and return periodically. One frequent visitor is comet 96P Machholz. Orbiting the sun approximately every six years, this comet has now been seen by SOHO three times. Credit: NASA / ESA SOHO

"SOHO has a view of about 12 and a half million miles beyond the sun," said Joe Gurman, the mission scientist for SOHO at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. "So we expected it might from time to time see a bright comet near the sun. But nobody dreamed we'd approach 200 a year." More than just a celebrated bright vision in the night sky, comets can tell scientists a great deal about the place and time where they originated. Comets are essentially a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. They are often pristine relics that can hold clues about the very formation of our solar system. On the other hand, if they have made previous trips around the sun, they can hold information about the distant reaches of the solar system through which they've traveled. We have a variety of tools to determine what comets are made of from afar. One is to watch how material evaporates off its surface when it comes close to the sun, and here's where SOHO can provide remarkable information. English/Nat Government officials in the Philippines have uncovered two tons of platinum worth around 26 (m)million US dollars. The hoard is believed to be part of a massive amount of treasure stolen by a Japanese general in World War Two. For decades, treasure hunters have searched for riches rumoured abandoned by retreating Japanese forces at the end of World War II. Now their quest seems to have been vindicated - with the discovery of the supposed Yamashita treasure. According to financial experts, the two-foot, bell-shaped lump of platinum - a metal more valuable than gold - would bring about 26 (m) million dollars on international markets. Tomoyuki Yamashita was the commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines towards the end of World War Two. He was rumoured to have gathered a huge amount of treasure which was buried in 170 locations in the Philippines. Known as the "Tiger of Malaya", he was executed for war crimes in 1946 and treasure seekers have been looking ever since. Government agents seized the platinum Sunday from a villager in Lallo, 250 miles north-east of Manila. Apparently a Japanese treasure hunter found the platinum in 1993 in the sea off Cagayan province, and gave it to the villager for safekeeping. But on his return the villager refused to give it back - so the treasure hunter reported the find to the authorities who have now claimed the precious metal. There is no certainty the treasure is part of the Yamashita hoard but the agent in charge of the operation believes the rumours to be true. SOUNDBITE: Allegedly, the informant in the case was the a son of a Japanese general, during World War Two, and before his father died, he was informed that there were hidden treasures of this kind in the place and he was provided with the necessary map in locating the treasure. SUPER CAPTION: Vincento de Guzman, National Bureau of Investigation By law, such treasures are considered government property. But according to officials, the unfortunate finder will be given a substantial share of the proceeds from its sale. Large Planet Moving into view between us and the Sun. What is it? It looks similar to one that came in February. To learn how to search for these images watch this video and follow these links. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/home.html Facts for this deep space camera are contained below. Disclaimer Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. SOHO SUN RIGHT NOW NASA Facts SOHO, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA to study the Sun, from its deep core to the outer corona, and the solar wind. Cost About a thousand million Euros. These costs have been spread between ESA and its member states, and NASA. Launch SOHO was launched by NASA on an Atlas II-AS rocket (AC-121) from the Cape Canaveral Air Station (Florida, United States) on 2 December 1995. Orbit SOHO moves around the Sun in step with the Earth, by slowly orbiting around the First Lagrangian Point (L1), where the combined gravity of the Earth and Sun keep SOHO in an orbit locked to the Earth-Sun line. The L1 point is approximately 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth (about four times the distance of the Moon), in the direction of the Sun. There, SOHO enjoys an uninterrupted view of our daylight star. LASCO Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronograph (LASCO) LASCO observes the outer solar atmosphere (corona) from near the solar limb to a distance of 21 million kilometres, that is, about one seventh of the distance between the Sun and the Earth. LASCO blocks direct light from the surface of the Sun with an occulter, creating an artificial eclipse, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. LASCO has also become SOHO’s principal comet finder. Principal Investigator: R. Howard, Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC, USA N.B. Real Time data has not been processed thoroughly int LASCO (Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph) is able to take images of the solar corona by blocking the light coming directly from the Sun with an occulter disk, creating an artificial eclipse within the instrument itself. The position of the solar disk is indicated in the images by the white circle. The most prominent feature of the corona are usually the coronal streamers, those nearly radial bands that can be seen both in C2 and C3. Occasionally, a coronal mass ejection can be seen being expelled away from the Sun and crossing the fields of view of both coronagraphs. The shadow crossing from the lower left corner to the center of the image is the support for the occulter disk. C2 images show the inner solar corona up to 8.4 million kilometers (5.25 million miles) away from the Sun. C3 images have a larger field of view: They encompass 32 diameters of the Sun. To put this in perspective, the diameter of the images is 45 million kilometers (about 30 million miles) at the distance of the Sun, or half of the diameter of the orbit of Mercury. Many bright stars can be seen behind the Sun. NOTE: Observations are almost continuous but their immediate availability on the website depends on having telemetry contact with the spacecraft via DSN stations. When there is no telemetry downlink, observations are recorded on the spacecraft's solid state recorder. After the downlink becomes available, we receive the new observations and those stored in the recorder. Once the data is downlinked, there is an automated process to post the images on our site in a web-friendly format (ex. JPG, GIF). It is common that "missing observations" appear at a later time. This is because we had to wait for the telemetry contact to download the stored data from the spacecraft. The data in The Very Latest SOHO images page is intended just for visual inspection, not analysis as it is not of science quality. In some occasions, the images have data gaps caused by transmission errors. These data gaps appear as black blocks, superimposed on the images (see image below). They look particularly bad and distracting when we generate movies from these images. To mitigate this, the automated process posting images on our site identifies gaps and uses blocks from a previous image to replace the missing blocks in the new image.
